Abstract Concert halls are mostly designed to accommodate a range of music performances since different performances require different room acoustics characteristics. There is an increase in demand for multi-use concert halls which requires a flexibility in the design elements. Some previous studies prove that by implementing passive variable acoustic solutions, acoustical conditions can be modified to make the venues compatible with various performance types. This study investigates the potentials of passive variable acoustic methods in symphonic music halls by focusing on Bilkent Music Hall in Ankara, Turkey. The methodology includes acoustical field measurements to test the effects of existing variable acoustic system, which is in form of operable/retractable wooden doors with fabric backing. The acoustical field tests are conducted in the unoccupied hall in both retracted and closed scenarios. Acoustic metrics (T30, C80 and EDT) are evaluated through comparison with well-known concert halls around the world. The acoustic condition is found problematic specifically in mid to low frequencies with excessive absorption in retracted state and high bass absorption in closed state due to the lightness of wooden doors/apertures. In the next step through interviews and questionnaires, the objective findings will be compared to the preference of musicians for different performance types. |
