Abstract In oil & gas systems, the structural vibration behavior of pipes can be strongly affected by the response of the acoustic domain represented by the gas being transported through pressurized tubes, pipes, cylinders, and other related components. The resultant Acoustically Induced Vibration (AIV) can be a cause of failure, for example, in the discharge and suction lines of reciprocating compressors systems. In this work, the authors present a strategy based on the acoustic Finite Element Transfer Method (FETM) and on the Timoshenko beam theory to represent the referred acoustic-structure interaction in gas pipelines as a weakly coupled system, modeled by the Finite Element Method (FEM). In this way, it is possible to predict the dynamic behavior of pipe systems subjected to harmonic acoustic loads, with excitation frequencies similar to the harmonics within typical compressors pulsation’s spectra. The open-source code called OpenPulse firstly solves the 1D linear acoustic system and, after, uses the resultant internal pressure field as the load case for the pipe vibration problem, which in turn is solved by FEM. The effectiveness of this strategy is presented using an example application. Coherent results were achieved using the proposed procedure. |
