Modeling Speech Intelligibility of Simulated Bimodal and Single-Sided Deaf Cochlear Implant Users

Abstract
A model of speech intelligibility (SI) for bimodal cochlear implant (CI) subjects was extended to include different amounts of aided impaired hearing contralateral to the CI. This was done by using a nonlinear hearing aid (HA) simulation, shadow filtering, and adding an electro-acoustic (EA) weighting function to address frequency overlap across ears. The extended model predicts speech-in-noise performance of simulated bimodal and single-sided deaf CI subjects with high accuracy, including their spatial release of masking for different spatial scenarios. The best fitting EA function indicates the importance of electrically versus acoustically stimulated ear to the model. © 2018 The Author(s). Published by S. Hirzel Verlag · EAA.
